Custom commissions

Custom painted
furniture with a past.

I turn a promising vintage piece, or one you already love, into furniture that feels made for your home. Every color, layer, and detail begins with the character of the piece and the life you want it to lead next.

Antique Victor Electrola Cabinet — Artistically Reimagined

Your piece, considered

More than a new color.
A new point of view.

Custom painted furniture is for the piece that has good bones but no longer belongs in the room as it is. Maybe it is a dresser you inherited, a cabinet with wonderful proportions, or the antique find you keep returning to because you can see what it could become. I begin by looking closely, not by covering everything up.

I notice the details that deserve to remain: a carved edge, a worn keyhole, the movement in the wood, original hardware, a little softness along the corners. Then I separate those signs of history from the repairs that need attention before the finish can do its work. Loose joints, lifting veneer, unstable feet, or a drawer that will not behave need a plan first. The best custom work feels effortless when it arrives, but it starts with paying attention.

From there, I build a finish around both the furniture and your home. A quiet wash can let a strong silhouette lead. A deeper color can make a large cabinet feel grounded instead of heavy. Decorative paper, raised detail, painted motifs, a patterned interior, or a change of hardware may become part of the composition when the piece asks for it. I do not use a formula, because a custom piece should not look like it came from one.

The finished work is intentionally human. You may see painterly depth, gentle variation, or a softened edge that gives the piece presence. It is still made to be used. I think about storage, surfaces, scale, doors, drawers, and the way furniture is actually lived with, so the finished piece can carry its beauty into the everyday.

How we begin

Bring the furniture,
the room, or simply
the feeling.

  1. 1. Share the starting point.Send me photographs of the furniture you own, or tell me what you are looking for. Dimensions, the room, colors you love, and how you need the piece to function all give me something useful to work with.
  2. 2. Decide what the piece keeps.I look at construction, scale, condition, hardware, and the details that make the furniture worth saving. We can discuss repairs, visible wood, and the parts of its history that should remain part of the finished story.
  3. 3. Shape a finish with character. We talk through color, depth, texture, decorative details, interiors, and hardware in relation to your home. You do not need a perfectly formed plan. A fabric swatch, a favorite room, or the words you want the space to evoke can be enough to begin.
  4. 4. Bring it home.I work through the agreed direction with regular communication, then arrange insured delivery or local pickup once the piece is ready for its next chapter.

Made around real rooms

A piece that earns
its place every
single day.

A custom painted piece can solve a practical need without looking like a compromise. A bedroom dresser can hold the color story together. A dining-room sideboard can bring depth to a wall that has been asking for it. A cabinet can give an entryway a place to land, while a small table can make an overlooked corner feel intentional. I work with the function of the furniture as carefully as I work with its surface.

If you are beginning with a piece you own, I will help you see whether it is the right foundation for the finish you have in mind. Some furniture wants a restrained transformation that lets its shape and joinery remain visible. Other pieces are ready for richer contrast, pattern, molded ornament, decoupage, or a detail that feels almost like jewelry. The aim is never to make old furniture impersonate something new. It is to give it a more personal place in the life you have now.

If you do not have the furniture yet, I can help you think through what to look for. Good proportions, useful storage, sturdy construction, a silhouette with some presence, and enough character to support the finish all matter. A vintage source gives the project its first layer of story. The custom work gives it the second.

For a large project, I also encourage you to measure. Consider the wall, doorway, stair, surrounding furniture, and the clear space needed for drawers or doors. Think about where a lamp, art, or a stack of books might land. Those practical questions make the creative choices more useful, and help ensure the piece feels meant for the room when it arrives.

A custom commission can begin with

The right excuse
to make something
singular.

A piece you cannot replace

Keep the scale, history, or family connection of a beloved dresser, cabinet, or table while giving it a future that fits your home now.

A room that needs one answer

Use a custom cabinet, sideboard, or storage piece to anchor a color story and give the whole room a more collected feeling.

A vintage find with promise

Start with a sourced foundation when the shape is right but the surface needs depth, repair, and a more deliberate point of view.

A gift with a lasting story

Make a useful older piece personal enough to mark a new home, a milestone, or a family connection without making it too precious to use.

What collaboration feels like

The best details
start with a real
conversation.

“From start to finish, the process felt truly collaborative. My cabinet is a true piece of art.”

Tracey, Etsy customer

“We talked frequently throughout the process so she could design the cabinet to be just what I wanted. I couldn’t be happier with it!”

Diane Hill Flynn, Facebook recommendation

the piece could
become.

Send me a few photographs, measurements, and anything you already know about the room or the feeling you want to create. If you are still working it out, that is all right. I find the best custom painted furniture often begins with one detail that is too good to ignore.

Common questions

Before your
piece begins.

Can you paint a piece I already own?

Yes. I can begin with furniture that already belongs to you, especially when the shape, scale, or story is worth keeping. Send me photographs, dimensions, and a few notes about the room, and I will help you think through whether it is a good candidate.

Can you help me find the furniture too?

Yes. If you have the vision but not the right starting point, I can help source a vintage foundation with the proportions and character your room needs. The exact piece matters, so sourcing is part of the conversation rather than an afterthought.

What can be customized?

Color, depth of finish, visible wood, painted detail, decorative paper, appliques, interior treatment, and hardware can all be considered. I shape those choices around the furniture and your home, rather than offering a one-size-fits-all menu.

How long does a custom painted furniture project take?

Timing depends on the foundation and the direction of the finish. More common furniture can take about 3 to 4 months to source and finish, while especially specific large pieces can take 5 to 6 months or longer.

Can my finished piece be delivered?

Yes. I arrange fully insured delivery within the contiguous United States, and local pickup is available in East Moline, Illinois. I confirm the delivery plan around the individual piece.
